Sermon: Defragment/Week 7: Our Cloaks of Worship

Date: Sunday, March 24, 2024

Text: Luke 19:28–40 (ESV)

28 And when he had said these things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 When he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount that is called Olivet, he sent two of the disciples, 30 saying, “Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this: ‘The Lord has need of it.’ ” 32 So those who were sent went away and found it just as he had told them. 33 And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” 34 And they said, “The Lord has need of it.” 35 And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. 36 And as he rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road. 37 As he was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, 38 saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” 39 And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” 40 He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”

Let’s Connect:

The desire for something more—for a deeper experience of God’s presence and love toward us—is evidence of the Trinity’s work within us

To Defragment is to simplify our whole lives around Jesus— keeping company with him in his ways & practices

Romans 12:1, “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.”

kintsugi (“golden mending”):

Worship (service) is a life fully given to God that keeps him at the center of our affections.

Following Jesus through His Passion (suffering) serves as a model for our worship.

Text Explained:

The scene:

The King:

The Cloaks:

The Controversy:

The doctrine of laying down your cloak (whole of self):

Romans 12:1, “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.”

Let’s Relate:

As we simplify our lives around Jesus in worship, surrender and adoration are inseparable.

We shape our affections by laying our “coats” down at his feet

Ephesians 5:17–21 (ESV) 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, 19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, 20 giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Guardrails for Worship through music:

Gordon Fee once said, “Show me a church’s songs and I’ll show you their theology.”

Lyrics that are: Christ-exalting —Trinitarian—Biblically informed

Let your focus move vertically

Sing words that God wants us to remember

Sounds that awaken our faith and bring rest to our soul.

Our Challenge:

Hebrews 12:28–29 (ESV)

28 Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, 29 for our God is a consuming fire.

Will you lay down your cloak?

Will we lay down our cloaks?
