Sermon: Defragment Week 6: Being With Jesus in Scripture

Date: March 17, 2024

Text: Luke 6:47–49

47 Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. 49 But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”

Let’s Connect:

Why does Scripture feel “dry” to me?

Why don’t I get anything out of it?

Text Explained:

Luke 6:46 (ESV)46 “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?

47 Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock.

Builder 1:

Hebrews 1:1–3 “ Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. 3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

Builder 2:

John 5:39–40 (ESV) 39 You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, 40 yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life.”

The Flood:

Jesus’ parable offers two different outcomes in the face of life’s storms:

As we come and hear and do—

live in relationship with Jesus in His Word—

He is in the storm

He redeems the storms

Isaiah 55:10–13 (ESV) 10 “For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven  and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, 11 so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it. 12 “For you shall go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and the hills before you shall break forth into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.

Let’s Relate:

We simplify our lives around Jesus in Scripture by being with him in them—

We read His Word in the context of growing relationship.

Our Challenge:

Leave the storage room and move to the family room!”

Invite Jesus to be present

Become aware that he is present through the Holy Spirit

Psalm 119:97, 103 (ESV) Oh how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day…..103 How sweet are your words to my taste” sweeter than honey to my mouth!
