NOTES: How To Neighbor, Part 6

Sermon: How To Neighbor 6:  Yes- Even Your Judas

Text: Matthew 26:14-25

Date: Sunday October 22, 2023

Matthew 26:14–25,14 Then one of the twelve, whose name was Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, “What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?” And they paid him thirty pieces of silver. 16 And from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray him.

17 Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Where will you have us prepare for you to eat the Passover?” 18 He said, “Go into the city to a certain man and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, My time is at hand. I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.’ ” 19 And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover.

20 When it was evening, he reclined at table with the twelve. 21 And as they were eating, he said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” 22 And they were very sorrowful and began to say to him one after another, “Is it I, Lord?” 23 He answered, “He who has dipped his hand in the dish with me will betray me. 24 The Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.” 25 Judas, who would betray him, answered, “Is it I, Rabbi?” He said to him, “You have said so.”

Let’s Connect:

When someone “triggers” you- especially through betrayal:

Luke 6:27–28, 27 But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.

Explain:

Judas- the greatest betrayer:

The hours leading up to the cross:

Jesus at the table- with Judas:

Psalm 55:12–14 (ESV) "12 For it is not an enemy who taunts me— then I could bear it; it is not an adversary who deals insolently with me— then I could hide from him. 13 But it is you, a man, my equal, my companion, my familiar friend. 14 We used to take sweet counsel together; within God’s house we walked in the throng.”

Psalm 41:9 (ESV) “Even my close friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted his heel against me.

Judas- an instrument of Satan, by his own choosing:

Death by betrayal?

Judas- rejecting Jesus as Lord and Savior:

How did Jesus neighbor Judas?

1. Loved him (John 17)

2. Made room for him at His table (until he chose to leave the fellowship)

Relate:

How do we neighbor Judas:

Luke 6:27–28, 27 But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.

1. Love them

2. Live sacramentally (Rom. 12)

Challenge:

Luke 6:35-36 35 But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. 36 Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.

We neighbor well and resemble our Father and Brother when we minister on the Sabbath and neighbor EVEN our Judas.
