NOTES: Defiant: Choose Gratitude, Part 3

Sermon: Defiant: Choose Gratitude Week 3- Whatever Thinking

Date: Sunday Nov 18

Text: Ps 100

Text Psalm 100:1–5 (ESV) Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth! Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing!  Know that the Lord, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. 4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name! For the Lord is good;

his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.

Gratitude is the genesis of our growing experience with the goodness of God.

Gratitude is the culture of our heart that keeps us humble rather than entitled.

Explain:

What thoughts motivate gratitude?

3 Know that the Lord, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

Know God and who we are in Him:

True gratitude is based on our positional and relational place with God.

This is contrasted with a different thinking: futile

Romans 1:20–21 (ESV)20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.”

Relate:

What thoughts motivate gratitude?

Philippians 4:8–9 (ESV) 8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9 What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.”

Whatever thinking delivers random results

Worship-inspired thinking reveals Kingdom realities

2 Corinthians 10:4–5 (ESV)

"For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ.”

Kingdom realities from Ps. 100: “The Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever”—

Challenge:

Hebrews 12:28–29 (ESV) 28 Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, 29 for our God is a consuming fire.
